  • June Oita TS Semiconductor Corporation is established as a joint venture with Toshiba Corporation to manufacture 'Emotion Engine', the CPU for the next generation PlayStation system
  • July SCE Nagasaki Semiconductor Inc. is established to manufacture 'Graphics Synthesizer', the graphics processor for the next generation PlayStation system

2000

  • February PlayStation.com (Japan) Inc. is established to proactively develop e-Commerce business
  • March PlayStation®2 has at its heart a 128 bit CPU, the 'Emotion Engine', with data processing capabilities far exceeding those of PCs at that time, and incorporates the 'Graphics Synthesizer', which delivers unparalleled graphic quality and detail. PlayStation®2 adopts DVD-ROMs as the new media for game distribution, and can also be used as a DVD player to enjoy visual contents, such as films. The console comes with DUALSHOCK®2 controller which is an enhanced version of the original DUALSHOCK® controller, newly incorporated with a vibration feature. The conceptually designed system comes in “Black” color, and can be placed either vertically or horizontally.
  • May 6 domestic group companies belonging to Sony Computer Entertainment achieves 'ISO14001' certification
  • July PS one® is the result of radical size-reduction of the original PlayStation, and has been condensed to approximately 1/3rd its size. The new design makes it easier for users to carry around the world of PlayStation entertainment anywhere they go. A specially designed PS one® LCD monitor is introduced in November 2001 as a peripheral, providing the system with additional portability. PS one® gains popularity not only as the home console but also as the portable PlayStation® system.
